Mercedes Benz GLE Class Overview
If there was ever a brand that signified luxury de facto, at least in our country; it’d have to be the one with the three pointed star. For decades, Mercedes – Benz has been the ‘go-to’ luxury brands for the rich and the famous. The German manufacturer has the widest luxury car portfolio in the country, with something for varying sizes of the fat wallet. Recently, Mercedes – Benz updated the nomenclature on all of it’s vehicles. The ML – Class, now called the GLE, was launched last year. Mercedes Benz GLE Class Design
The new GLE SUV beautifully combines the classic elements of a SUV with modern features but we were quite surprised when we saw that the styling cues of the new GLE looks quite identical to the ones you find in the new C Class shocked? Don’t be because take a look at the facelift GLE and you will notice that the front headlamps which look quite similar to the C Class headlamps which also comes with daytime running lamps and also optional LED lamps, while the eye catching grille looks in par with rest of the modern Mercedes vehicles. What gives this sophisticated front some muscular appeal are the front bumper with chrome plated skid plates while the air vents too does the same job of giving the SUV some aggressive appeal. Towards the front bonnet you also notice two power domes which obviously adds more muscle to the SUV.
Step towards the side profile and things start to become familiar, you cannot miss the signature C pillar styling which perfectly blends with the rear side windows. While those huge wheel arches and impressive ground clearance do gives us hint of its off roading capabilities as well.
Step towards the rear and you will find the facelift GLE styling matches with the updated design the new LED taillamps too first perfectly in their places while what we do liked are the redesigned exhaust which are integrated into the lower section of the bumper, you might also notice new chrome elements towards the rear bumpers which completyes the overall look of the SUV.
The new styling definitely has helped removed some of the boxy design clues off the older SUV and this new SUV looks almost same as any other modern Mercedes SUV’s including the smaller GLA or the newly introduced GLC. Mercedes Benz GLE Class Cabin
You have to climb into the cabin as the seats are high. Thanks to its high seating position typical of an off-roader, the GLE offers you the very best in comfort the moment you get in. Plus it comes with electrically adjustable front seats fitted as standard, providing optimum support and excellent comfort on long journeys. You also get a memory package but it is only on the 400 and 350D. Up to three different positions for the electrically adjustable front seats, steering column and exterior mirrors can be stored and retrieved at the touch of a button. The Memory programming comprises all the seat adjustment options, such as height and fore/aft position of the seat, inclination and height of the seat cushion and seat backrest angle.
The seats itself are large and offer excellent thigh support and heavenly leg room. Operation is intuitive using ergonomic switches in the door control panels. For a better view when reversing into parking spaces, the exterior mirror on the front passenger side can be automatically lowered when reverse gear is engaged. Unlike in the E.class the climate control is just two zone. The brushed wood adds a certain rawness to the cabin and a more rugged feel.
With 2010 litres of stowage space, the new GLE has the largest load compartment in its segment as I had mentioned earlier. Plus it boasts the longest load compartment length and best through-loading height at 1833 mm and 839 mm respectively. Not to mention outstanding flexibility. The rear backrests can be folded with a 60 : 40 split, also the cushions can be raised to form a level load compartment floor. And the rear backrest angle can be set in any one of ten positions. The screen is large at 7 inches but is not a touch screen. All can be controlled from the COMAND system.
Mercedes Benz GLE Class Engine
Mercedes is offering GLE 250d and 350d variants in India, yes, the ‘CDI’ moniker too has been replaced with ‘d’ for the diesel models. The 250d gets a 2.1-litre 4-cylinder diesel engine producing 204 BHP and 500 Nm. We drove the GLE 350d which gets a 3.0-litre V6 diesel mill that churns out 258 BHP and 620 Nm. The GLE moves with a smooth and linear progress initially and once past the mid-range, it pulls like whoosh! Refinement is at its best, no diesel clatter at lower revs and near the redline the 6-pot oil burner sounds a bit sporty. There is a wee bit of turbo lag but the meaty mid-range is what makes the GLE feel like it has wings, strong yet effortless acceleration.
Finally the 7G-TRONIC transmission has been replaced by a 9-speed 9G-TRONIC gearbox, which is lighter, more fuel efficient and highly responsive than the former. The gears are stacked closely and hence gear changes are brisk, no more do you feel the power dip while changing the cogs. The steering mounted paddle shifts are now more fun to use since you get the right gear at the right time. The 9-speed transmission is quite active for multiple downshifts and also offers relaxed cruising ability. The engine spins at just 1150 RPM at 100 km/hr in ninth gear. The intelligent DYNAMIC SELECT system gives you a choice of five modes – Comfort, Sport, Slippery, Individual and Off-Road. This system changes parameters of the engine, transmission, steering and suspension. In Comfort, the throttle response is subdued while the gears change early for a smooth drive and in Sport, it’s the opposite to extract the max out of the engine and transmission which shifts near the 4500 RPM redline. You can tweak each aspect individually with the ‘Individual’ mode. The system can also adapt to your driving style and tweak the mechanicals accordingly.
Mercedes Benz GLE Class Riding
The strength of this twin-turbo engine is its strong surge of boost, which gives it a very effective low-end punch and a strong mid-range. However, for an SUV weighing over 2 tonnes the GLE 250d is modestly powered and it won’t exactly get your pulse racing. The handling is in the same vein too and on challenging roads, you could feel the mass of the SUV which had a fair bit of body roll. Though there is good grip from the 255/55 tyres, the GLE isn’t particularly agile and doesn’t like to dart into corners, but prefers to gently ease into them. The electro-mechanical steering isn’t very sharp or responsive either, but has lots of feel and weighs up with a nice consistency which gives the driver a lot of confidence, especially at high speeds. Straight-line stability is superb and the GLE’s ability to cruise all-day long without demanding too much from the driver is one of its strengths.
Ride quality is a big plus too. Our test car was fitted with the optional AirMatic suspension (the India car is likely to get conventional steel springs), capable of tackling most surfaces. Of course on German roads, it’s hard to judge the true ride quality from an Indian perspective, but the generous amount of wheel travel indicates that the GLE, like the M-Class will be quite adept at swallowing potholes Request Mercedes Benz GLE Class Test Drive.
Mercedes Benz GLE Class Safety
The vehicle gets dual circuit with diagonally-split brake system with anti-lock-brake system with electric brake force distribution, electronic stabilization control with brake assist and tandem brake booster. Ventilated disc brakes in front and disc brakes at rear are fitted to retard power. Other prominent safety equipment featured in the vehicle comprise of anti-slip regulation, electronic differential lock and electronic stabilization control. Mercedes Benz GLE Class Verdict
Undoubtedly the prime reason to buy the luxurious GLE is the engine-gearbox combination. Silky smooth, unhurried and hence with excellent cruising ability, the GLE is the one for long haul trips. NVH levels are low and ride quality in comfort mode is supple, the cabin is well appointed, and in-cabin flexibility adds to the versatility of the GLE. It’s not an enthusiast’s SUV due to its off-roading limitations and that lack of finesse around corners, but these are things it was never meant to ace at. The GLE is the SUV for the open road to munch miles tirelessly, and here it is completely in its elements.
